Highlight: h300 - Henry of Prussia (1726 - 1802)
Just over 80 kilometers north of Berlin lies Rheinsberg House, picturesquely situated in the Brandenburg town of the same name on the shores of Lake Grienerick. Originally established in the 16th century, the moated palace first belonged to Crown Prince Frederick, who would later become King Frederick II, known as Frederick the Great. After ascending the throne in 1740, he gifted the House to his younger brother, Prince Henry.
For Henry, Rheinsberg became a deeply personal retreat. He spent five decades here, far removed from the political affairs of his brother’s Berlin court – a place where he could never quite escape Frederick’s towering shadow.
It was Frederick II who insisted that Henry marry; only after this marriage in 1752 was Henry permitted to establish his own court at Rheinsberg. Prominent artists and architects such as Carl Gotthard Langhans, Georg Friedrich von Bouman the Younger and Friedrich Reclam found inspiration in the palace and its gardens. Henry created a vibrant court of the muses, renowned far beyond Rheinsberg’s borders – a cultural haven where music and theatre drew artists from near and far.
In 2026, the 300th anniversary of Henry’s birth offers a fitting occasion to reflect on his lasting impact on the palace, the gardens, the town of Rheinsberg, and the wider region.
During your visit, discover how Henry’s life and many interests are reflected in the palace’s furnishings, and experience the creativity and desire for
renewal that he used to carve out his own identity – distinct from that of his older brother.
Immerse yourself in the transition from playful Rococo to the clarity of early Neoclassicism. Get lost in the intricate details of the Shell Hall, and explore the interplay of early Neoclassical design with ancient themes in the bedchamber and Henry’s library. Be enchanted by illusions of Italian grottos, exquisite tapestries, and striking marble sculptures on the palace island. Join us in honoring Prince Henry of Prussia and his former sanctuary – a place full of history and stories, of art and inspiration.
