Historic Windmill

The Historic Windmill at Sanssouci Palace is one of the most famous mills in Germany and is shrouded in a fascinating legend: It is said that Frederick II was annoyed by the rattling of the mill and demanded that the miller Grävenitz tear it down. But when he threatened to sue, the king relented. The original trestle windmill from 1738 was demolished due to dilapidation and replaced by a gallery windmill from 1787 to 1791. It was in operation until 1858 and was declared a monument in 1861. After its destruction in April 1945, reconstruction began in the 1980s. The sails turned again for Potsdam's 1000th anniversary celebrations in 1993. Today, the mill is an active technical museum, where wind power has been used to process organic grain into meal and flour since 2003. As a functioning mill, it contributes to the intangible cultural heritage of the traditional miller's craft.
