Charlottenburg Palace | Palace Chapel
Although the exterior of the chapel provides no hint of anything special hidden inside, once we step inside we are all the more surprised by the spatiality, luxuriant decorations and use of light: the space is sectioned by columns decorated with gilded stuccowork and murals. Beneath the oak pulpit is the original elaborately carved and gilded altar table. Facing it is the royal loge, displaying the mighty crown and Prussian eagle carried by two angels. The Hohenzollerns’ faith and their notion of God’s mercy are manifest in the way that the worldly and spiritual powers, and the throne and altar have been arranged in relation to each other within this space.
Also badly affected by the destruction of the palace during World War II, the Palace Chapel’s full reconstruction was not completed until 1977. The Chapel’s atmospheric setting is ideal for concerts, lectures and readings.
