Opening Hours, Admission, Group Reservations, How to get there
The exhibition at Charlottenburg Palace has been dedicated to the myriad of facets surrounding Luise as a person. Her charm, her natural grace, and her harmonious family life made her a legend in her own time already. Her dedication to political reforms and her opposition against Napoleon made her into a symbol of hope in Prussia.
The exhibition pursues the origins of the "Legend of Luise", and looks for the person behind this myth. Over 350 paintings, sculptures and historical documents, among these masterpieces by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, Johann Gottfried Schadow and Christian Daniel Rauch, invite you to take a closer look at the life and the afterlife of the Queen.
Luise's Private Apartment
A highlight of the exhibition is Luise's private apartment in the New
Wing. Thanks to an only recently rediscovered inventory list from 1810,
it has been possible to reconstruct these rooms to what is virtually their
original condition. Thus, we may experience the Queen's authentic living
environment as a unified entity once again in this Anniversary Year.
The Queen's final resting place in Charlottenburg Palace Garden illustrates in an exemplary manner how the Legend of Luise has changed throughout history - from a Temple of Luise via the first tomb chapel to a sacred imperial site. For the Year of Luise, the mausoleum was extensively restored: the important sarcophagus sculpture by Christian Daniel Rauch was extensively cleaned and now shines in new splendor.
At the center of the Palace Garden, King Frederick William III instructed Luise's Island to be built to the memory of his beloved wife. Designed as the exact opposite of the melancholy of the mausoleum, the lovely and cheerful island atmosphere symbolizes Frederick's hopes for better times.
