From baroque garden to landscape park
Charlottenburg Palace Park was laid out as a French baroque garden during the construction of the palace by Siméon Godeau, a Le Nôtre pupil. At the end of the 18th century, during Frederick William II's, reign such a design was regarded as unfashionable, and the park was converted into a landscape garden. This work was supervised by Johann August Eyserbeck from Woerlitz. From 1819, Peter Joseph Lenné continued this development, and the baroque garden disappeared completely.
After the destruction caused during the Second World War, a baroque parterre was again laid out directly next to the Palace; the rear part of the garden has been restored in the English style.
