Sacrow Park
Garten Sacrow im Panorama

The Charm of Romantic Views

The 24.5-hectare Sacrow Park lies across from Glienicke and the New Garden on the other side of the Havel River. Its grounds complete the ring of the park garden complexes surrounding a lake in Potsdam called the Jungfernsee. This extraordinarily charming location was one of the main reasons that Frederick William IV acquired the Sacrow estate in 1840. The king immediately had the Church of the Savior, based on plans by Ludwig Persius, built on the promontory projecting into the Jungfernsee. Peter Joseph Lenné received the commission to design the scenic park area.

An array of views from the garden side of the small palace look out onto a hunting lodge called the Jägerhof and a pavilion known as the "Large Curiosity" in Glienicke Park, to the Flatow Tower in Babelsberg Park and to the silhouette of Potsdam's city center. The reconstruction of the park began in 1994, following upon what had been an unspectacular century of neglect, as well as a total loss of some garden spaces in Sacrow Park as a consequence of the Berlin Wall. Now, Lenné's splendid footpaths can be experienced once again. An impressive oak to the west of the palace is the oldest tree in the Potsdam municipal area. It is neighbored by a rare mixed fruit tree orchard that is over 100 years old.
