Flatow Tower in Babelsberg Park

A landmark in Babelsberg

Flatow Tower in Babelsberg Park was erected in the mid-19th century, modeled on the medieval tower at Eschenheimer Gate in Frankfurt am Main. Emperor William I thus continued the Potsdam architectural tradition of situating lookout buildings at elevated sites.

Visitors to the Babelsberg Park landmark, quite visible from afar, can enjoy not only the tower interiors with some original décor, but also an incomparable view. Looking out from inside, different sections and perspectives of the park unfold as one’s vantage point rises. The upper platform around the tower circumference offers an impressive panorama of the city and the park landscape.

The tower was named after the Flatow estate, a property in West Prussia belonging to Prince William that produced the revenue to fund its construction. The 46-meter high, neo-Gothic-style outlook tower is surrounded by a star-shaped moat. An originally existing drawbridge no longer survives. The imperial couple used the tower both for brief stays and for objects stemming from their individual passions for collecting.
